Yesterday, I went to The Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek with my friend Matt Buckmaster of Island Seed & Feed, and once we set out to walk the garden path, suddenly in front of us was Larry Einhorn, a garden docent offering his services. Larry is a deeply knowledgeable gardener who led the way showing us the collection. Interestingly, Ruth Bancroft at the age of 64, purchased a Canary Island Aeonium that she bought in Fairfax, and returned soon after for more succulents. Forty years later, at the age of 104, Ruth’s wonderful garden is still being developed & growing and celebrates a focused plant palette of succulents, aloes, yuccas, euphorbias, cactus and more in a dry garden setting. In 1988, the Garden was the first private property donated to the national Garden Conservancy. Ruth still actively participates in the planning, but she no longer micro-manages as she had for over forty years.
